Composition in Two Genres

On this page I have included the essay for this assignment, the draft which was reviewed by my peer, and two compositions of my choice.

The two compositions are organized in the following manner:

  • Genre (A) Poster
  • Genre (B) Poem

After genre (B) you will find the final work of my essay, and below it will be the draft which was reviewed by my peer.

(A)

(B)

Rationale:

The topic of choice for my research essay revolves around finding out if there was an existing correlation between attachment styles created during childhood and adult relationships formulated later in life. The purpose of my work was to improve the quality of romantic relationships which are formed during adulthood by identifying the main components that play a crucial role in their breakage and creation. After conducting a substantial amount of research and collecting scientific data from numerous studies, I have arrived at the conclusion that there was in fact a correlation between the two. I have reviewed different types of attachment styles and their negative as well as positive influence on adult relationships. I have also found out from the credible sources which I have discussed in my research paper that individuals with secure attachment styles are most satisfactory and compatible when paring them with individuals of other attachment styles. This discovery is especially significant to my audience which I identified to be the students of CCNY. I have made this choice of audience because during the pandemic the students were forced to take classes online and had limited or no access to classes in person. Slowly coming out from the pandemic, the students who will be attending CCNY will have to go out in an open environment and soon find themselves on the campus grounds facing other students. This will lead students to form many relationships including romantic ones. On top of the stress that some students might experience while readjusting from remote learning, it would be hurting to see their future being influenced or changed for the worse by an unsuccessful relationship or a heartbreak. I believe it is crucial to give them the tools which would help them to make more conscious choices while building their relationships and improve the overall satisfaction rate of their experiences in CCNY.

In order to achieve my purpose while writing my research essay I had to think about my audience that caused me to face many obstacles such as presenting and communicating my writing in a way which would be most appealing for them. In order to overcome my obstacles, I have chosen to dive into the world of rhetoric and consider using some of its persuasive elements to capture my audience’s interests. One of the rhetorical elements which would be most effective in this case is genre. The right genre would allow the ideas emphasized in the essay to be embraced and acknowledged by the audience in a manner that would closely align with the intentions of the writer. There are various genres which would be appealing to my audience such as YouTube Videos,Tik Tok, Emails, Ted Talks, Posters, Newsletters, Blogs, Podcasts, Instagram Posts, Facebook, etc. A large amount of my audience is familiar with these genres and in fact use them in forms of receiving and communicating information every day. The two genres which I planned to use in my composition project were a Poster and a Poem. Even though rhetoric is very reliable, there are other useful tools in literature such as stylistic features. This will help distinguish my work and give it diversity which would likely capture the audience’s attention even more. For example, I might use Conciseness to sharpen up the main ideas which I’m trying to communicate to the audience and use much stronger words, and in the process of composing my project I will use figurative devices to compare my idea to something like a situation, so that the students would understand what I’m trying to communicate better.

Reflection:

I have also used this rhetorical element when creating my composition project for the same reason, but unlike the process of my research, when composing my project, I could elaborate on my opinions more and focus on feelings rather than facts alone. In a research paper my focus was on how I could deliver facts in an informative tone, but in my project I had much more freedom as most of my focus did not go into convincing the audience of my credibility but rather in sharing my feelings and perspectives on the information which I found.

When moving from the process of research essay to my composition project, I noticed that while composing I have held a deep focus on trying to attract the audience and get them in my favor. I have asked myself various questions regarding how I could make the project more comprehensible and make the flow of information more coherent. The barriers which I have encountered while composing was trying to communicate with my audience without overloading them with information and not being able to show them my perspective on the matter being discussed. The way which I overcame this barrier is by organizing the information in a logical order that would serve as building blocks for the explanations following the ideas presented and choosing the main points from the sources while discarding the useless ones. The methods I used in constructing my research paper varied from the process of creating my project. During the process of writing my research paper I thought about how to present information without looking biased. I didn’t think about the audience’s personal feelings regarding the information instead I thought about how much of it would be made understandable for them and what I could do to make it more cohesive, but with my project that was not the case. During the composing process of my project, I had to think about what elements I was able to implement in my presentation to make it more appealing or attractive to the audience. Instead of presenting raw information I must form and shape it in a way which would attract the students to keep reading on and explore the topic in further depth. The genres which I have chosen are a poster and a poem, they have helped me tremendously in bringing out the purpose of my writing, because both genres are made easy to understand which allows me to appeal to a diverse audience and people who like to digest information in a quick manner and who might not have the time to read a longer piece of writing. Both of the genres are also efficient because the imagery allows students to only take a small amount of their time in understanding the purpose of what is being presented, and a short poem is also efficient for the same reason that it doesn’t take a lot of time from the student’s day to comprehend the context behind it and is also easy to memorize due to its rhyme scheme. The main rhetorical practices which I found myself to be using were genre, tone and rhetorical situation. The genre, as discussed before, was useful because it helped me to find the right format to communicate the information to a much broader and more diverse community of students. For example, it is hard for some students to read longer pieces of writing due to English not being their first language. By providing pictures or a short writing with a rhythm scheme, it makes it much easier for them to quickly catch on the main idea of what is being presented, comparing that to a long research paper with high end vocabulary words, or complicated sentence structures. Tone can also influence the attention or the way which my composition would be perceived in. I chose my tone to be empathetic because I believe that the type of audience which I’m appealing to tend to appreciate a voice that could relate to feelings rather than something that is more informative. The reason being is that it makes me sound understanding of the audience’s feelings and makes my work look emotionally appealing. Other than the rhetorical devices which I have listed here, rhetorical situation would be the main attraction point of my audience. Rhetorical situation provides me an upper hand because it helps me keep the audience’s attention by using various aspects of rhetorical elements to keep them hooked to my project, they would want to identify what sparked the existence of my work, what is the point I’m trying to make, and it would help me to convince them of the credibility of my ideas. Without a rhetorical situation I believe it would be much harder for the audience to find a reason to keep reading my work. These rhetorical practices were very effective in the way which I have used them, because they served the exact purpose of what they are generally used for, which is to convince and persuade the audience.

Assignment Draft:

#1 Audience Strategy

The topic of discussion which I have chosen for my inquiry-based essay was whether there was an existing correlation between attachment styles formulated during childhood and adult relationships. After conducting a substantial amount of research and collecting scientific data from numerous studies, I have arrived to a conclusion that there was in fact a correlation between the two. While writing my inquiry-based essay I was thinking about the audience which I suspected to be the future first-year college students and the obstacles which I would be facing was how am I able to shape and present my writing in a way which would be me more appealing to them. The way in which I would overcome this obstacle would be to find a genre which would satisfy the presentation of this topic in a manner that would force students to embrace the ideas emphasized in the essay. The genres which the audience would value the most from my perspective is a blog. The reason being that a blog is a modern way to communicate information, which the 21st century students are most comfortable with. Most blogs are posted on different web platforms on the internet which could be easily accessed anytime and anywhere by anyone who owns a technological device. Another genre that might be preferable by my audience would be an email. This type of genre is also reliable because students especially need to check their emails quiet often to see if they received any important updates or notifications concerning their education. YouTube is another way to catch the student’s attention as it is one of the most popular and used platforms across the internet and especially during leisure time. Instagram ads would also be reliable due to the 21st-Century generation scrolling through pictures of their friends and favorite celebrities wondering what they are up to, and in the glimpse of their scrolling session kicking in an ad here and there might tempt them to pay a closer look. Facebook would also be another valued genre for the same reason as Instagram. Tik Tok would be one of the most attention-grabbing genres that might have a higher chance of success than the other ones. The reason being Tik Tok promotes to a younger audience and with all the same age group celebrities on the platform, students are motivated to linger on the app a lot longer. Speaking about celebrities, Celebrities endorsement might also be a form of genre, Students just like any people have bias feelings towards certain celebrities and having the celebrity who they adore show a support for an idea will increase the chances of them developing a spark of interest towards whatever is being promoted. Another form of genre which I would say is affective would-be product labeling. This time instead of people promoting the idea, there could be a certain product which the students have positive feelings towards that could be helpful in promoting the research by associating it with the product. Letters could also be a useful genre because students are still in college and it means that they would pay a closer attention to their mailboxes as they never know what kind of letters might come in, related to their education. For example, when they will see a letter with their name on it, they will be prone to opening it and this will cause a higher chance for them to pay attention to whatever is inside. The last genre which I think would be suitable is a scientific newsletter, as it is leaner to a specific category, the students who are interested in science would have a higher chance of being interested in this research. One of the stylistic features which I think will help me achieve my purpose is parallelism, the reason being that it will help me bring out the importance within two ideas when I am trying to connect them, and this will give the audience a clearer understanding of the reasoning behind what is being discussed.

#2 Potential Genres Proposal

The genres which I’m thinking to use for my project would be a blog and a scientific newsletter. The reason I think these 2 genres are appropriate and suitable for my audience is because the first genre could be easily accessed any time and on multiple forms of technological devices. This reason is especially important because the audience are upcoming first-year students and mostly they tend to have a preference for something that is on the internet and could be easily found, because they are used to using their smartphones and laptops where they spent most of their time due to school or leisure pleasures. I also think that the second genre which is a scientific newsletter is reasonable to use for my project, as my essay includes lots of psychological elements and case studies conducted by researchers. By breaking it down into a specific category, students who have an existing interest in science would be more likely to view this writing and would be able to apply their background knowledge to the ideas presented, if they have any.

Feedback:

Dea Abzhandadze(Tanim, Saifuzzaman)

After going through Dea’s work, I was impressed with her use of vocabulary and grammar. She is very clear about her audience and her purpose. Also, she spent a good amount of time explaining how she will reach her audience and what are their benefits. Her writing caught my attention immediately. In addition, she uses precise vocabulary to explain her understanding of the topic. Her writing was easy to follow since she put the information in multiple paragraphs. One thing I would change is to make it double spaced which will make it even easier to read. Fix some minor grammatical errors as well. She sounds pretty knowledgeable about her topic since she did a lot of research and collected data. She did not just come to a conclusion with her previous knowledge or her opinion. Overall it was a great assignment and I gained knowledge after reading it.
